The Eagles Community Band is pleased to present their Annual Fall Concert at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield.  The concert will feature the Eagles Trombone Ensemble, the Eagles Big Band and the Eagles Concert Band.

The concert band, under the direction of Carl Jenkins, will present a varied program of works including the Carmen Fantasy for Flute Solo and Band by Francois Borne.  The composition features many themes from Georges Bizet’s famous opera, “Carmen”.  Ellen Dooley, a professional flutist with the United States Marine Band in Washington, D.C. will be the flute soloist.  Flutist Gunnery Sergeant Ellen Dooley joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in May 2005.  Her musical training includes earning degrees from the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Her background includes being a flute instructor at the Levine School of Music in Washington, D.C. and touring as a soloist with the Marine Band on the 2010 national concert tour.

The concert band portion of the program will also feature Leonard Bernstein’s “Overture to Candide” from the 1956 opera and a new band arrangement of “Officer Krupke” from Bernstein’s 1957 musical “West Side Story”.  A significant composition of the concert band repertoire, “Lincoln Portrait” will also be performed.  This is a major work for band featuring Aaron Copland’s composition with many quotes by President Abraham Lincoln.   The narrator for this piece will be Rick Spalding, Chaplain to the College at Williams.  As a Yale undergraduate, he spent a good deal of his non-academic time doing theatre and this piece showcases his theatrical and musical talents.

As warm-up for the main performance, The Eagles Trombone Ensemble, formed in 2013 and under the leadership of Mike Oft, former band director from Portland, Oregon, will entertain in the lobby from 6:15 pm - 6:45 pm performing a wide variety of music including classical, contemporary, ragtime, swing and rock.  To add a little more spice to the sound of the ensemble, the group includes a French horn and adds clarinets to a couple of tunes such as “Pennsylvania Polka”.  Members of the ensemble include amateur and professional musicians from the Eagles Band and the area as far away as Albany NY and includes  former principal trombonist of the BSO, Ron Barron.

The main event begins at 7:00pm on the main stage with the Eagles Big Band.  The Eagles Big Band is an exciting part of the Eagles Band organization.  The band plays a variety of styles, including:

  • popular vocal pieces such as "Big Time" & "I Can't Give You Anything But Love";
  • Big Band hits from arrangers such as Phil Woods' "Randi", Sammy Nestico's " Queen Bee " and Neil Hefti's "Little Darling", and,
  • contemporary songs such as Van Halen's "Moon Dance" & Kander and Ebb's "New York, New York".
  • We also feature custom arrangements from several local composers and arrangers.

The current Eagles Big Band instrumentation is a full stage band with a saxophone section, a trombone section, a trumpet section, and a classic rhythm section with drums, bass & piano.  The band is led by saxophonist Stephen Sanborn & run by band manager & trumpeter Richard Paul.
