The Young@Heart Chorus
Catching Up with The Counterculture

What started out in 1982 at a Western Massachusetts elderly housing project to joyfully pass the time instead of passing before your time has developed into the stereotype-defying, generation-crossing musical extravaganza better known as the Young@Heart Chorus. From The New York Times to TIME, The Ellen Show to The Daily Show and stars of the hit Fox Searchlight documentary, this group of seniors, ranging in age from 73-92, has performed from Northampton to New Zealand, Europe to Japan, on over 30 international tours and was most recently recognized as one of CNN’s 2019 Champions of Change. An evening with the Young@Heart Chorus proves that it is “possible to grow old without growing boring.”

Catching Up with The Counterculture is a wonderful junket into the Young@Heart Chorus hallmark mix of contemporary music, delightfully unexpected from a chorus of elders.

The show is performed in two acts. The first act captures a world that can often seem out of balance and surreal: the circus with its elements of ring master, tight-rope, vaudeville, carnival barkers, smoke and mirrors serves as a metaphor for the global stage. Young@Heart Chorus’ older performers are conscience guides in the struggle to discover universal truths. In this show, the chorus sing songs, from Radiohead to the Psychedelic Furs, and the Talking Heads to Sam Cooke that explore our fragile and mysterious existence, and ultimately suggest the potential for positive outcomes.

In the second act, Young@Heart bring their unique perspective to four days in the mud. In 1969, Young@Heart members were raising families and attending cocktail parties. 50 years later, the clothes and hairstyles haven’t changed, but the attitudes have, as they turn on the music they begged their kids to turn off. The show is taken from the songs on the Woodstock album with Carlos Santana, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Richie Havens, Sly and the Family Stone and many others reinterpreted in Young@Heart’s signature style. Now the songs of the younger generation are the songs for all generations—with a new and urgent meaning.
